Florida International University (FIU) offers a variety of resources for individuals experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. These resources are designed to assist in addressing essential needs such as food, shelter, and financial assistance.
Here are some of the resources available at FIU:
1. Panther Pantry: FIU has a food pantry called "Panther Pantry" that aims to address food insecurity for students and community members. The pantry distributes non-perishable foods, fresh produce, and hygiene items twice a month.
2. Emergency Housing Assistance: Students who are dealing with an unexpected life crisis, such as homelessness or loss of housing, may be eligible for emergency housing assistance through the Office of Student Access and Success. This program provides short-term housing and support services while the student secures housing or a stable living situation.
3. Homeless and Housing Assistance: FIU's case management program connects homeless students and community members with nearby shelter resources, including Miami-Dade County’s Homeless Trust and South Florida’s Coalition for the Homeless.
4. Financial Assistance: FIU offers several financial assistance programs including "The FIU Cares Emergency Fund." This fund aims to support students facing unforeseeable financial hardships to enable them to continue their education.
FIU is dedicated to supporting students and community members experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity. The university aims to ensure that all its students have access to basic needs so that their academic success does not suffer despite life's challenges. Communication and getting in touch with the appropriate resources is key to accessing these programs.
The Golden Scholars program is an admissions pathway for select first-generation students from under-represented backgrounds. Students selected to be Golden Scholars will participate in an intensive six-week residential summer summer bridge program that offers academic preparation, individualized advising, and personal attention from faculty, staff, and peers. Students in the program will have the opportunity to sharpen their academic skills and develop a support network of students, faculty, and staff by becoming familiar with the FIU community and its many resources.
FIU's Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides mental health services to students that will facilitate and enhance their personal learning, emotional well-being, and academic skills development.
The student food pantry provides non-perishable food items including canned proteins, fruits, dairy, vegetables, and soups, along with grains, oils and condiments. Toiletry items are also provided in our pantry.
The Student Emergency Fund (SEF) provides limited emergency financial assistance to currently enrolled FIU students who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses because of temporary hardship related to an unexpected situation.
